BIO101 in Obesity
A unique program to protect muscle during weight loss
A unique program to protect muscle during weight loss
Medical Need:
Obesity affects more than 1 billion people worldwide, 96% of whom report mobility problems.
In recent years, anti-obesity medications have revolutionized obesity management, delivering unprecedented weight loss. However, they face a critical challenge: fat reduction is accompanied by significant loss of lean muscle mass.
No approved therapy currently exists that can protect muscle mass during obesity management.
Preclinical results:
A four-week study combining BIO101 with a GLP-1 receptor agonist in diet-induced obese mice showed encouraging results:
- Improved locomotor activity and grip strength in animals versus the untreated group
- The drug combination compensates for alterations in muscle contractile force
OBA Phase II trial design:
This clinical study will focus on muscle mass in obesity management.
- Target indication: as an adjunct to GLP-1 receptor agonists, to reduce muscle mass loss caused by GLP-1 therapy and dieting in overweight and obese adults
- Target population: 164 obese patients with one or more weight-related comorbidities, initiating treatment with semaglutide (a GLP-1 agonist)
- Primary endpoint: muscle strength measured by knee extension (dynamometry)
